Blackball rules

Players must lag for the break using same size balls, and both players must lag at the same time. If a player hits a side cushion, crosses over to the opponent’s half of the table or commits a foul, the player loses the lag. Closest to the bottom cushion wins. Winner has choice.

You can break from anywhere behind the baulk line. Once the balls are broke, 2 balls must fully pass the middle pockets or a ball must be potted for a legal break. If the black is potted from the break it is deemed a re-rack with the same player to break again. No penalty.

During a ‘ball in hand’ situation, the visiting player can EITHER request a referee move the cue ball OR ask their opponent for permission to move the cue ball. Make your intention clear so there is no confusion. Failing to ask or get permission results in a foul (not loss of frame). If in doubt, always ask a referee.

When a ball is touching a cushion it is deemed a frozen ball. It is up to the player, opponent or referee to point out if the ball is frozen. If it is, the frozen ball must hit another cushion OR another ball must hit a cushion OR a legal ball must be potted.

Players may use the shaft of their cue to position the cue ball BUT MUST NOT use the tip or ferrule. Using the tip to position the cue ball is considered a shot and results in a foul. We recommend players always use their hand.
